SJCSD Deferment Programs
Our mission is to prioritize students’ needs, reduce stigma, and build a stronger workforce through professional development, collaboration, and alignment with our core values. We are committed to empowering young adults with diverse abilities and exceptionalities. We elevate their confidence and self-sufficiency, helping them become active members of society by working closely with families, building trust, and fostering strong relationships. Through vocational, life, and social skills training, we prepare students for meaningful employment and various life situations. Currently, there are two deferment program options in St. Johns County.

Life Work Transition Program
Life Work is one of two deferment program options offered by St. Johns County School District. Our program serves students with disabilities who have earned a standard high school diploma but need continued support to develop the skills necessary for successful employment, social interaction, and independent living. (For more information, see the Understanding Deferment tab). Life Work is a hands-on, transition program that combines classroom instruction with real-world experiences. We focus heavily on integrating students within their community through work-based learning experiences (WBLE) and community-based vocational education to prepare students for entry into the workforce or postsecondary education with much of our instructional time taking place within the community setting. In addition, we help students and families connect with adult service agencies, such as Vocational Rehabilitation, to support a smooth transition after deferment ends.

ARC Community Campus
Community Campus is a public charter school of the St. Johns County School District and one of two deferment program options available to students with exceptionalities. It provides a vocationally focused setting designed to help students develop the practical life and employment skills necessary for successful adult living. Students engage in community-based experiences for a portion of their day, with the remaining time spent in a structured school setting tailored to their individual needs and preferences. These real-world opportunities include employment training, civic engagement, social participation, and involvement in clubs, organizations, and hobbies aligned with their interests. As an affiliate program of The Arc of the St. Johns, Community Campus is committed to preparing students for adulthood by fostering meaningful connections and supporting students and families in accessing adult services and natural supports within the community, as appropriate throughout their lifespan.
