Welcome to Life Work

We invite you to watch our spotlight video to gain a better understanding of our program and hear perspectives from students, family members, host businesses, and community partners. We also encourage you to participate in a scheduled tour to experience Life Work firsthand and see how we support young adults as they prepare for life after high school.

About Life Work
Life Work is one of two deferment program options offered by St. Johns County School District. The program operates at two locations: First Coast Technical College in St. Augustine and Vicar’s Landing in Ponte Vedra.

Life Work serves young adults with disabilities who have earned a standard high school diploma but benefit from continued support in building skills for employment, social interaction, and independent living. Our program blends classroom instruction with real-world experiences and is grounded in community integration. A central focus of Life Work is helping students identify their unique aptitudes and abilities so they can build confidence, explore interests, and move onto a clear path toward success after officially exiting high school.

Through work-based learning experiences (WBLE) and community-based vocational education, students gain hands-on training to prepare for employment or postsecondary education. We also assist families in connecting with adult service agencies, such as Vocational Rehabilitation, to ensure a smooth transition after deferment ends.

Enrollment & Placement
Participation in SJCSD transition programs, including Life Work and Community Campus, requires a completed application and review process. This ensures placement aligns with each student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Decisions consider the student’s performance levels, transition goals, and independence in vocational, social, and self-determination skills.

We encourage you to explore our resources, connect with us, and see how Life Work supports students in taking their next steps toward adulthood.
