Deferment Pathway to Academic and Career Programs

In SJCSD, our mission is to ensure that students with disabilities exit high school with a clear plan for their future. This includes linking them with the right community agencies and resources before they officially exit the K–12 system.

Life Work now offers a one-year transition pathway designed to help students build the skills and supports they need to confidently pursue college, technical training, employment, or community opportunities that promote long-term success.

As part of this effort, we have developed a one-year bridge program for students eligible to defer their diploma. This program focuses on strengthening essential transition skills that increase the likelihood of successfully moving into postsecondary education, career pathways, or community connections.

Program Courses

  • Career Experiences (7980120):
This course helps students with disabilities build knowledge and skills to explore career options, access community resources, and practice work-related behaviors through school- and community-based experiences. It typically includes non-paid community-based vocational education (CBVE) involving exploration, assessment, and training. Instructional activities often occur in natural work settings to support practice, generalization, and skill development.
  • Career Placement (7980130):
This course prepares students with disabilities to apply career knowledge and skills in paid employment settings. It is designed for students capable of working and living independently with minimal support. Students are expected to perform job duties independently once trained. Employment experiences are aligned to the student’s IEP and reflect their career goals.
  • Executive Internship (Course codes vary based on student need)
This course provides students who are employed with the flexibility to maintain part-time work while continuing to participate in school-based transition services. The goal is to help students strengthen their employment skills and expand their educational opportunities as they prepare for post-graduation success.
